The Value Crisis Glossary

"NIMPLE"

NIMBYs are the people who say "Not In My Back Yard" - they want problems moved geographically.  NIMPLEs is my term for the 21st century equivalent.  These are the people who, when told of the looming environmental dangers, look around them and see no obvious threat.  They might even acknowledge the serious long-term consequences from current global behaviours, but the real impact is "Not In My Personal Life Expectancy".  The problem is moved chronologically instead.  Let some future person deal with it.

To be fair, NIMPLEs come in several varieties.  The lack of obvious cause-and-effect can inspire apathy or skepticism, the timelines may make procrastination inevitable, or the problem may seem overwhelming.  Sadly, there are also those who actively deny the evidence simply because of the potential effect on their current bottom line, and who choose to stay on course to maximize their own lifetime wealth.

The good news is that NIMPLEs are, by definition, becoming extinct even more rapidly than expected.  In other words, things like climate change effects will be in their life expectancy.  It's time for them to rethink that strategy of inaction.
