The Value Crisis Glossary
"Qualitative Values as Polarities"
I propose that any qualitative value can be expressed as a polarity. Freedom, for example, is a polarity of Liberty and Regulation. Freedom needs liberty, but too much liberty leads to anarchy and a loss of freedom. To avoid the chaos of anarchy, you need regulation, but too much regulation leads to autocracy and, again, a loss of freedom.
Other examples of qualitative values as polarities include justice (mercy vs. strictness), friendship (independence vs. dependence), religion (omniscience vs. freewill), beauty (simplicity vs. complexity), and community (sacrifice vs. selfishness).
Mapping qualitative values as polarities allows us to better understand the paradoxes inherent in their management, and helps distinguish them from More is Always Better thinking.
